Step Up Special Issue No. 7 | Going beyond “body parts.” 4 steps to get words moving

~Don't just say "head" and "shoulders"! Besty's way of expanding your words~

"I can sing 'head, shoulders, knees and toes,' but it doesn't come up in everyday conversation..."

For such moms, we will introduce some step-by-step techniques to help your baby's language develop from body parts!

STEP 1 | First, link words: touch, move, and name!

The first step is to learn body parts such as "head," "arm," "leg," and "nose" through songs and gestures!

As you play, encourage your child by saying things like, "Touch your nose!" and "Where is your ear?"

🌱Bestie's Points🌱
Body parts are easy to remember when you touch them!

However, if you stop at just the words here, you will likely end up with only the actions.

Be sure to say sentences such as, "This is my nose," or "You touched your head!"

STEP 2 | Connecting with sensations and movements: Pain, tickling, movement

・Ouch! My arm hurts!

・Let's stretch our legs!

・Tickle, tickle!

・I can't reach! My arms are short! The experience of moving, feeling, and reacting will turn on the "language switch"!

🌱Bestie's Points🌱
When you connect it with physical sensations (pain, ticklishness, inability to do something), the words begin to convey your feelings.

English that combines emotion and the body is what makes the input last longer.

STEP 3 | Communicate in phrases: Expand into what you can and can't do and what you should be aware of!

・I can touch my toes!

・Your hands are so small.

・My legs are tired.

・Don't put your fingers in your mouth.

Short sentences will develop from saying "I did it," "I noticed," and "I want to say."

🌱Bestie's Points🌱
“"Their own bodies" are the world that is closest to children.

This is where "English for talking about yourself" is born!

STEP 4 | Pretend play and everyday life: Develop the ability to care, communicate, and interact in English!

・Let's play doctor!

・Where does it hurt?

・Put on your hat.

・Wash your hands!

Even in everyday life, there are many situations that involve body parts, such as washing your hands, putting on clothes, and getting injured!

🌱Bestie's Points🌱
“This is your chance to develop your knowledge of body parts into English for interacting with others!

Through interactions and daily life, English will naturally become your own.

Summary | Body parts are a gateway to learning about your own body in English

The words learned through songs and games,

“The key to moving up is to develop it into "your own feelings" and "interactions with others"!

Today, try to be aware of the parts of your body you are washing in the bath.

“Where is your elbow?”

This is where the body language begins to work.
